Godine 1940 mlada Eli Hamilton dolazi u gradić Sibruk, koji se nalazi na obali u Sjevernoj Karolini, da provede ljeto sa svojom porodicom. Kao tinejdžerka, Eli Hamilton (Rejčel Mekadams) na karnevalu upoznaje lokalnog momka Nou Kalouna (Rajan Gozling). Noa osjeća da on i Eli treba da budu zajedno, iako on radi u mlinu i pripada nižem staležu. Tokom jednog strasnog i opuštenog ljeta na jugu oni su se zaljubili jedno u drugo.
