Radnja filma je usredsređena na mlade godine budućeg pisca, u kojima on, siroče, pronalazi prve prijatelje, ljubav, ali i umetničku inspiraciju, dok vreme provodi s drugarima-buntovnicima iz škole. Sve ovo se dešava u vreme izbijanja Prvog svetskog rata, usled čega preti i propast mnogih međusobnih prijateljstava, a kao posledicu ima i pisanje kultne The Lord of the Rings trilogije.
