Pred svoj jedanaesti rođendan, Hari Poter dobija pismo sa Hogvortsa, škole magije i čarobnjaštva. Nakon što su, dok je on još bio beba, Harijevi roditelji ubijeni, džin Rubeus Hagrid ostavio ga je na pragu njegovih teče i tetke. Jedanaest godina kasnije, nesrdačni rođaci krili su od njega pisma koja su neprestano pristizala. Na kovertama je pisalo Hogvorts i oni nisu želeli da ih Hari ikada pročita.
Ipak, Hagrid uspeva da Hariju donese pismo sa Hogvortsa u kojem saznaje da je čarobnjak, a da je njegove roditelje ubio zli čarobnjak Voldemor. Na putu ka Hogvortsu Hari upoznaje Rona Vizlija, koji će mu postati najbolji drug, i Hermionu Grendžer. Hari postaje učenik Grifindora. Hari, Ron i Hermiona, nakon nekog vremena, otkrivaju da je u školi sakriven kamen mudrosti i da neko želi za sebe. Njih troje sumnjaju najviše na profesora Snejpa, koji je prema Hariju bio naročito strog. Kroz mnogo avantura, ovo troje prijatelja saznaće tajnu Hogvortsa ali i Harijeve prošlosti.
